The Terror Behind The Terrorists

Our fight is not only with flesh and blood.
We are at war -- there is no question about it. The battle is raging all around us. We face decisions that will determine our future security and peace. Terrorists are hell-bent on destroying life as we know it, and not just by killing us. They want to rob us of our ability to live with meaningful purpose. They want to take away the privileges of freedom. They intend to put us in bondage, hold us captive to fear and steal the blessings of peace and prosperity.

Not a single day passes that I don't thank God that I live in a home where I have electricity; I can turn on the lights to see. I have heating and cooling to control the temperature in our home. I can turn on the faucet and get clean water. I can eat and feel safe. I can get in an automobile, purchase gasoline and travel wherever I wish. I have security that I do not take for granted.  

Our adversaries desire to take away these comforts. They want to totally disrupt life as we know it, imprison us in uncertainty and destroy our hope for a future. This is part of the threat we face in the "war on terror."

But there are other enemies that we face every day. They seek to destroy us in similar ways both large and small. They drive the terrorists to commit their acts of terrorism. And this terror is much closer to home.

In the Bible, these deadly powers are referred to as "principalities and powers" in the spiritual realm. They are invisible influences that affect everything in the visible realm. Like the wind, which we cannot see, we witness the daily effects of this unseen force. Yet these spiritual adversaries seek to destroy us even more directly than many of our terrorist foes.

Like enemies in the natural realm, we cannot defeat those in the supernatural unless we acknowledge their existence, understand their schemes, and actively work to defeat them. A true warrior stays alert because he or she realizes that a war rages all around. A good soldier puts on the appropriate armor, acquires the proper weapons and engages in the fight.

Supernatural powers can only be fought in the supernatural. The Bible (a handbook on spiritual warfare) instructs us to put on the whole armor of God and fight the good fight of faith. The Good News is that if we are on God's side of the battle, victory is guaranteed.

The primary weapon of spiritual warfare is prayer. Every "soldier" in the "army of the Lord" must pray for wisdom for all of our leaders. Pray for strength of character and the resolve to withstand the pressures and pain of warfare.  

I constantly intercede on behalf of our nation's leaders, as well as those in our military who dedicate their lives to protecting and extending freedom. But a purely political or military strategy is not enough to win this battle. Every person of faith must engage in the spiritual battle to defeat the enemies behind our enemies -- the spiritual forces that seek to destroy us, often through the hands of those given to violence, fear and terror.  

In our own nation's Civil War, both sides prayed for God's blessing. But rather than rousing each side with haughty self-righteousness, President Lincoln viewed the conflict as call to prayer. "I have been driven many times upon my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go," Lincoln declared. "My own wisdom, and that of all about me, seemed insufficient for the day."

The winds of human wisdom blow every which way in Washington D.C., yet it is not sufficient. We must humbly bow before God and seek His wisdom to ensure victory. If we do not fight the right fight in the right way, our enemies will not only succeed in destroying our comfort, but also our freedom and future. The real war will be won in the realm of the spirit through prayer and perseverance.

So much is at stake for ourselves, our children and generations to come. That is why I am calling every believer to fully commit themselves to urgent and constant prayer.
