Investing In Wisdom 10/17/2008

Biblical wisdom

We need something better than the wisdom of men.

With all the bad news related to the world economy, many people feel a sense of desperation. Sadly, it's not desperation for God, His will or His wisdom, but a desire for security and wellbeing. But the peace we should seek is that which comes from above -- a peace the world cannot give -- and wisdom that can only come from the One who is all and knows all.

The Proverbs tell us to seek wisdom and understanding. True wisdom is the ability to understand God's perspective. Regardless of what has happened in your financial world, God is able to deliver and direct your life. He is your only real security. Men naturally and foolishly tend to invest everything in this temporary world. Many have put all their eggs in one basket, but it proved to be the wrong basket. The Bible warns of putting our trust in mere men because we are instructed by God to make wise investments.

We are also commanded to keep Him first and to honor Him with our "first fruits." I continually remind the viewers of LIFE Today to make God first in every area of life and make His will their top priority. I point out, as the scripture so clearly does, that if we will invest in the wellbeing of others and care about those who need help, God always notices and He promises to reward us according to His will. Far too often our desires waste time, energy and resources. God does say that if we delight in Him, in His will, in His ways, He will grant us the desires of our heart. Keep in mind, however, when He is your delight, your desires are shaped by God and not simply your own appetites.

Amazingly, in the midst of almost unparalleled economic uncertainty, support for the outreaches of LIFE has remained strong. We do face economic challenges, including world food shortages and the cost of natural disasters. Our mission partners are facing some challenges they've never seen, but we're trusting God to help us because precious lives depend on it.

It seems that people who have heard from God have made wiser investments and, as a result, are not panic-stricken. This concurs with the promise that God does not give us a spirit of fear, but of love and a sound mind. I urge you to not allow a spirit of fear or panic to direct your present or future decisions. Pray that things will stabilize, but know that government is not the answer now and never will be. As they infuse capital into the free market system, pray that the government gets out of business as fast as they tend to get into it. Unfortunately, this is not normally the case and they rarely run anything well. Now more than ever, we need Godly wisdom in government leadership.

Also, pray that God will deliver us from a spirit of greed. It is an abomination, as is socialism masquerading as compassion. This form of government should not be confused with charity. Charity is not charitable when the government forcefully redistributes the wealth. It is only charity when prosperous people willing help others. We live with a charitable, giving heart because God's love is in us. But government-enacted programs have no compassionate connection, so they are routinely filled with manipulation and abuse.

It will always be and only be the productive individuals who enable opportunity and possess the purchasing power to drive the production of goods and create jobs. We need leaders who understand this and citizens who are free from rampant self-centeredness.

I have always believed in investments that hold or increase in value, especially those that are in our power to appreciate. I have seen many people invest successfully in real estate, which is something that they enjoyed while improving its value. Whatever you decide to do with your wealth and finances, make sure that you are at peace, trusting God and helping others, especially those you don't think could ever help you.

Isaiah 33:6 says, "[God] shall be the stability of my times. A wealth of salvation, wisdom and knowledge. The fear of the Lord is my treasure." In a time when the rest of the world worries about their "treasure," it is such a joy to prosper in God's grace and wisdom.
