President Bush understood the struggle against evil.
President Bush understood the struggle against evil.
"I have often spoken to you about good and evil," Bush told the nation. "This has made some uncomfortable. But good and evil are present in this world, and between the two there can be no compromise. Murdering the innocent to advance an ideology is wrong every time, everywhere. Freeing people from oppression and despair is eternally right. This nation must continue to speak out for justice and truth. We must always be willing to act in their defense and to advance the cause of peace."
The realization of this truth is critical for a national leader. Those who deny the existence of evil disarm us in our struggle to defeat it. But the man who knows more than anyone else about our enemies' intentions fully understood his responsibility to take evil seriously.
"While our nation is safer than it was seven years ago, the gravest threat to our people remains another terrorist attack," Bush warned. "Our enemies are patient and determined to strike again. America did nothing to seek or deserve this conflict. But we have been given solemn responsibilities, and we must meet them. We must resist complacency. We must keep our resolve. And we must never let down our guard."
When Mr. Obama takes the oath of office next week, it is critical that he understands the intense battle that rages on this planet. Evil is real; it is the enemy of all life. It has no regard for the well being or security of any person on the planet. Evil distracts, deceives, defeats and destroys everything in its grasp. Evil seeks to captivate everyone it can influence and control. Every believer in the power of Almighty God must pray for divine guidance and supernatural deliverance from the deadly tentacles of evil.
Evil is on the prowl and targets every one of us. It must be resisted and defeated in our personal lives, then in every area of public life. Wisdom is essential to identify and overcome evil's deadly potential. We have seen the devastating effect evil has on marital relationships, much of the entertainment community, in terrorist attacks on 9-11 and throughout the civilized world, and we are currently witnessing it in its unadulterated expression in Israel and Gaza.
Hamas reveals the total disregard for the innocent and the commitment to the destructive intent of evil. Israel is rightly defending its country and its people. As an act of goodness beyond the normal practice in warfare, they are openly warning the innocent in Palestine of the targets where Hamas terrorists reside. These perpetrators of evil deeds are gathering innocent families and children into the very buildings that are targeted. They are hiding behind the innocent and oftentimes evacuating the very place while they leave the helpless behind. True goodness will always in every way seek to protect the innocent and minimize and if possible eliminate any collateral damage during the most intense wars.
This has been the practice of the United States of America from the beginning. On occasion there will be some who will violate our commitment to this important position protecting all innocent wherever they are. When this happens, these foolish individuals are controlled by the very force of evil themselves. Those who believe in this power I referred to when I called for prayer is the power of Almighty God. Jesus said there is one good and that is God, so all true goodness is in fact godliness and the ability and strength to live a truly good life comes from God himself.
Everyone who understands the power of prayer must pray for President-elect Obama, as well as every leader throughout the free world, to understand that evil is real and deadly. It is to be identified and dealt with firmly. People will never be protected from evil by merely building walls and keeping people in some form of the very bondage evil intends to impose. God is not in the business of taking people captive. He wants to free us. And this freedom is enjoyed and experienced when we understand the importance of boundaries that are never to be confining walls, but liberating opportunities. God has told us how to live in order that we can live free from evil's dominating force.
Pray for Israel. Pray for the Palestinians. Pray for all in the Middle East and throughout the world that they can know and live as over comers in this world plagued by evil. Never doubt, it must be resisted and defeated on all fronts, both personal and in the public arena. Failure to acknowledge it, recognize it and deal with it will damage far more than the economy.
